First news from the surgery room

I just talked with Sridhar. He was very jubilant. The doctor performed the operation on the right eye first (worse of the two eyes). After surgery to the right eye, the doctor thinks that the right eye has 50% chance of "vision" or 30% chance of "ambulatory vision". Dr. Trese will perform surgery on the left eye on Monday, December 12, 2005.

Sidharth was admitted to the hospital at 7:00 am EST. The eye examination under anaesthesia started at 9:00 am. The doctor gave his initial opinion and presented realistic outcome of the surgery to Sridhar and Vinaya (parents) at 9:45 am. Dr. Trese said that the right eye was worse than the left eye. Left eye has better chances of vision. Dr. Trese decided to perform the surgery on the worst eye first (the right eye). He went into surgery at 10:30 am EST. The surgery took a little bit over an hour. After the surgery to the right eye, Dr. Trese thinks that the right eye has 50% chance of "vision" or 30% chance of "ambulatory vision". This is much better outcome than we thought. The only time we would know the real outcome of the surgery is in the next couple of weeks. Dr. Trese plans to proceed with the surgery to the left eye on Monday at 10:00 am EST.

Dr. Trese believes that, baby Sidharth will at least have "poor vision"; may be even better, after the surgery is performed on both eyes.
